1. Zermatt, Switzerland

Zermatt is a mountain resort in southern Switzerland, renowned for skiing, climbing and hiking. This charming alpine town lies below the Matterhorn peak, 1,600m above sea level. Surrounded by the tallest peaks in the Alps, Zermatt has 223 miles of runs in four huge ski areas. If you think that sounds too athletic, there's always après-ski! Filled with boutique shops, restaurants and bars, the town has a lively scene including outdoor ice skating rinks and curling.
2. Budapest, Hungary

Considerably cheaper than much of Europe, Budapest is known as 'spa capital of the world'. The Szechenyi Spa Baths are the oldest in the city. Located in City Park, it has over 15 indoor pools, 3 outdoor pools and a multitude of spa treatments on offer. It is a grand and elegant city with plenty to see and do including one of the best Christmas markets in Europe.
3. New York, USA

Whether its Christmas shopping along fifth avenue, catching a Broadway show or ice skating in Central Park, New York is especially magical in winter. With many parades and festivities throughout the season, New York is the city that never sleeps.
4. Canary Islands, Spain

Here the weather is pleasantly warm all year round. Choose between Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, all of which are packed full of culture and beautiful beaches to stroll along.
5. Phuket, Thailand

Phuket is the largest and most popular island in Thailand, think warm turquoise waters and sandy beaches. Whilst there are many pockets of paradise to be enjoyed, Phuket is also known for its lively nightlife. Head to Surin Beach for trendy bars and clubs, a great way to celebrate in the new year.
